Roderick Vos

Roderick Vos, (Groningen, The Netherlands, 1965) started his studies in Industrial Design at Eindhoven's "Design  Academy" in 1984. In 1987, working as a trainee, he moved to Japan for 6 months, where he found an excellent tutor at GK Industrial Associates Tokyo, founded by Kenji Ekuan. Also during that year he worked as a trainee for 4 months at Studio Ingo Maurer in Munich. Being partly Asian himself, this particular period evidently had a large impact on his personal interest in Asian Culture and its works. Together with his partner textile designer Claire Vos, he graduated in 1990 from the "Design Academy and moved to Indonesia, Surabay to develop their knowledge of ratan furniture and textile production. In 1999 they officially started their design office ‘Studio Roderick Vos’, based in Heusden Vesting the Netherlands. Several of his works were acquired by prestigious museums, such as Stedelijk Amsterdam and Design & Arts Museum NY.

Claire Vos

Claire Vos Teeuwen, (Tegelen, The Netherlands, 1965) was predestined to become a textile designer. As she says, ‘The love of textiles is in my blood. Production of textiles and ceramics has been in my family for generations.’ She specializes in re-interpreting traditional techniques, colourings and forms, paying close attention to the quality of the materials she uses. Her source of inspiration may be an Indonesian ikat weave or a Dutch woolen blanket, but the end result will be completely contemporary, almost graphical or industrial. Vos studied her craft in Italy, Switzerland, and Indonesia before settling in the Netherlands.

This innovative studio couple works mainly in lighting, textile, accessories and furniture for international brands such as Driade, Functionals, Moooi, Linteloo, Alessi, Indera, Koninklijke Tichelaar Makkum. Since 2016 they both became art directors for Dutch furniture brand PODE. Each of their products is characterized by careful research and passion for technology, material and color.

Opinie

Aesthetics

According to Plato every soul desires the good, the true and  the beautiful especially artists and artisans! These are absolute and eternal qualities that arise from a single source. So anything that is beautiful is naturally good and true, too.

Is this idealistic? Naive? I admit, we have stepped into the 21st century. Nowadays everything seems so relative, and Platonic idealism so distant. But I feel a greater kinship with his ancient philosophies than with our last century's postmodernistic view of the world.

I don't want to be constantly entertained, or to entertain others. I want to make you happy with beautifully useful pieces. Objects that exude aesthetic pleasure. Strong shapes that feel beautiful, good and true.

Technology

Roderick & Claire : Industrial techniques from the past and the present are an ongoing inspiration to us. Product innovations often arise out of an understanding of materials and old craftsmanship combined with new technology. But this is not the only key in making a successful design. The men and women who blow glass, weld, cast, weave, construct and upholster our dreams are definitely the most important emotion to a product. We love to share these dreams with you.
